Box Score WAXAHACHIE – Wayland Baptist moved into fourth position in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's soccer standings after the Pioneers came up with a 3-1 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University here Saturday afternoon.
"The result today's definitely helped us out," Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey said. "The girls played really well. They never let up and always stayed with it and were able to take advantage of some opportunities we were able to create."
The Pioneers got their first goal from
Julia Bianchi on a free kick from 30 yards out almost 17 minutes into the match, and their second from
Jodian Morris on a breakaway goal that went around the SAGU keeper some five minutes after halftime. It was the second goal of Bianchi's Wayland career and the team-leading 10th for Morris.
SAGU didn't let the Pioneers relax for long as the Lions scored just 2½ minutes later.
Posey took the blame for the goal.
"It was probably a mistake on my part. I thought the ball was in a little better position than it was. I made a call and it got us scored on," he said.
It didn't matter, though, as
Annysa Plata gave WBU back its two-goal cushion when she scored her third goal of the year in the 70
th minute, shooting into the right corner of the goal from the left side of the 18-yard box.
Paige Rovillo got the assist.
The Pioneers were outshot, 17-11, with WBU goalkeeper
Bailey Stengler being credited with nine saves. Morris and Bianchi took three shots apiece.
"Overall I thought the girls played really well. It was a well-played game on both sides," Posey said. "Give credit to SAGU. They have a solid team and played really well, but our girls matched them step for step and battled all 90 minutes. We deserved to win today."
Wayland next heads to Muskogee, Okla., to take on Bacone (1-5, 0-4) at 1 p.m. Thursday, then to Siloam Springs, Ark., to face John Brown (6-6-1, 2-1-1) at noon Saturday. The Pioneers are home for their final two regular-season matches against Oklahoma City (7-3-1, 3-0-1) on Oct. 28 and Southwestern Christian (7-5-1, 1-3-0) on Oct. 31.
