Box Score MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Wayland Baptist won for the third time in four outings and pulled into sole possession of fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's soccer standings with a lopsided 7-0 victory over Bacone here Thursday afternoon.
"Our girls played well," Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey said. "Bacone came out really compact defensively and pressured us hard. It took us a few minutes to get things moving."
But when they did, the Pioneers rolled. Wayland was in control at halftime, 4-0.
The Pioneers (4-5-3 overall, 3-1-2 SAC) got two goals each from
Jessica Bell and
Jodian Morris, and from apiece from
Zeltzin Gutierrez,
Annysa Plata and
Tori Nimtz. Morris now has a dozen goals on the second, while Bell and Plata have five each. It was the first goals of the season for Nimtz and Gutierrez.
With official stats not immediately available, Posey guessed that his team got off 30-35 shots on goal against Bacone (1-7, 0-6).
"Give credit to Bacone. I think they only had one sub, but they worked hard all day. They defended well and they were physical despite a short roster."
The coach also said he was proud of his own team for maintaining focus and being unselfish.
"In a game that gets lopsided it's easy to get sloppy, but our girls did a good job of concentrating. This was not the prettiest game we've ever played, but they were consistent in what we wanted them to do. That, to me, is a sign of a team in the process of learning and maturing.
"We also made several unselfish plays. For example, instead of forcing a shot we played the ball back to a teammate with a better opportunity," Posey added. "I was pleased with the girls' approach to the game and the way they stayed with what we wanted them to do."
It was Wayland's most-lopsided win since an 11-0 victory over Dallas Christian in the 2012 season.
"We played everybody we brought, and everybody contributed and did a good job," Posey said. "We have another big game on Saturday, so we wanted to rest some legs."
The Pioneers will be in Siloam Springs, Ark., on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against John Brown (8-6-1, 4-1-1), which is a half-game ahead of Wayland in the SAC standings in third place.
"A good result against John Brown would be significant," Posey said. "We'll go in with a solid mindset and all of the concentration and effort we've got. We'll play 90 hard minutes and hopefully come away with a good result."
JBU has ended Wayland's season in the SAC Tournament the last two years in Siloam Springs. Last season the Golden Eagles won 3-0, while in 2013 the teams tied 2-2 before JBU advanced following a shootout win, 4-3.
Wayland has never beaten John Brown in 11 meetings. The Golden Eagles have won eight and there have been three ties.
