Women's soccer can't solve Arkansas jinx

Box Score SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Wayland Baptist's tough luck in Arkansas against John Brown continued Saturday afternoon when the Pioneers women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the Golden Eagles.

John Brown, which has ended Wayland's season in the SAC Tournament the last two years in Siloam Springs, scored on a penalty kick 5½ minutes into the first overtime to deny Wayland what would have been its first-ever win over JBU in what was the teams' 12th meeting.

Wayland coach Shiloh Posey said the foul that resulted in the winning PK was a tough call.

"It was on a transition play. The ball got played to our right side and the (John Brown player) came back across the middle of the box. She dribbled one or two of our players and into the top of the 18. She took one more touch and Cerila Zamarripa made a good tackle, I thought, in a really solid way to defend and deflect the ball. But the referee made the call."

JBU's Jastin Redman scored her 14th goal of the season, and second of the game, into the right side of Wayland's goal to win it.

In their final regular-season road match, the Pioneers – coming off a 7-0 win over Bacone on Thursday – took a 1-0 lead when Julia Bianchi notched her third goal of the season almost 13 minutes into the match. Bianchi connected on a free kick from the top of the box some 20 yards away.

It was the only goal of the first half.

"John Brown came out really strong and pushed on us. But the girls weathered the proverbial storm and stayed with it. We got a couple of lucky bounces that kept us from getting scored on," Posey said.

"We began to control the game and got into a rhythm. We had a really solid first half and controlled a lot of the possession."

After halftime, Posey said the Golden Eagles came out very aggressive to start what he called a "helter-skelter" second half.

"They came out guns blazing and really started to attack the ball," he said.

Redman knotted it up for JBU when she scored in the 69th minute.

"I felt like we began to give ground a little bit and get out of our particular style that we do best at," Posey said, adding that the Pioneers "were able to deny a couple of other (scoring) opportunities" to force what was their fourth overtime match of the year. Wayland is now 0-2-2 in extra-time contests.

John Brown outshot Wayland, 30-8. Both teams managed about half their shots on goal, 16-4, as Pioneer goalkeeper Bailey Stengler recorded 14 saves. Bianchi had four shots, including two on goal, while Annysa Plata got two of her three shots on goal.

John Brown now leads the all-time series with Wayland, 9-0-3.

Things don't get any easier for Wayland as the Pioneers (4-6-3 overall, 3-2-2 SAC), currently in fourth place in the SAC standings, host Oklahoma City (9-3-1, 5-0-1) at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The Stars, who are receiving Top 25 votes, are second in the standings behind USAO (9-4-2, 7-0) and ahead of third-place John Brown (9-6-1, 5-1-1).

"It will be a quick turn-around for us. We'll do everything we can to get ready," Posey said. "We'll try to get our legs rested and our focus back and give everything we have on Wednesday.

"We still control our own destiny as far as having the opportunity to host a first-round (SAC Tournament) game, but we have to take care of business."
