Shiloh Posey and the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team won their first Sooner Athletic Conference match of the season Tuesday afternoon against the St. Gregory's Cavaliers in a shut-out, 5-0.
Posey believes the Pioneers have found their true identity and are at the highest point in the season so far.
"The last two or three games have had consistent improvement," Posey said. "We finally put the pieces together (today)."
The Pioneers out-shot the Cavaliers, 18-2, and scored a team-high five goals, including two from senior
Jodian Morris, the reigning SAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, who scored WBU's first two goals five minutes into the match and again at the 27-minute mark. It marked Morris' third straight two-goal match and gives her nine goals on the season.
Jessica Bell assisted on both goals before scoring one of her own in the 53
rd minute. Wayland's other goals came from freshman
Macie Loggins (74
th minute) and senior
Annysa Plata (85
th minute).
"It's nice to be offensively productive," Posey said. "Scoring goals gives everyone confidence. It takes good defending and team effort for scoring."
It marked the first time Wayland scored more than two goals in a match all season and was the Pioneers' first five-goal match since a 5-0 win over Southwestern Christian to close the 2013 regular-season.
Posey believes his strategy is starting to work and will help his team play up to its potential.
"We start quickly, pressure the ball and keep the other team out of the game," Posey said. "(We) need to continue this approach and do what we do well."
The next game for the Pioneer women will be a5 p.m. Saturday against the Mid-America Christian Evangels (5-4, 2-0), one of three teams at 2-0 in the SAC following their 1-0 win over Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday.
"We're going to put our best foot forward," Posey said.
