Box Score Hoping to end the regular-season on a high note and gain momentum for the post-season, the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team instead fell to an inspired Southwestern Christian Eagles squad on Saturday night at J.V. Hilliard Field, 2-0.
Â
The loss – the third straight for the Pioneers – evens Wayland's overall record at 7-7-2 and its Sooner Athletic Conference mark to 3-6. Wayland stands seventh in the conference and will either finish as the No. 7 or No. 8 seed for the upcoming SAC Tournament, depending on the outcome of a match on Monday between Southwestern Assemblies of God University (8-8-1, 3-5), which is just ahead of Wayland in the standings, and St. Gregory's (5-9-2, 2-5-1), which is just behind the Pioneers.
Â
If St. Greg's wins, it's believed that Wayland would be the No. 8 seed and travel to Chickasha, Okla., to take on conference champion Science and Arts of Oklahoma (16-2, 9-0) in the first round of the tourney. If SAGU wins, Wayland would be the No. 7 seed and travel to Siloam Springs, Ark., to take on No. 2 John Brown (12-5-1, 8-1).
Â
The eight-team tournament begins next weekend.
Â
Against third-place Southwestern Christian (13-5, 7-2), Wayland surrendered goals in the 23
rd minute and the 72
nd minute.
Â
The Pioneers were outshot by the Eagles, 12-9. While eight of Southwestern Christian's shots were on goal, only two of Wayland's were on target by
Emmanuel Emmas and
Arturo Valle-Sardaneta.
Â
Valle-Sardaneta was one of two seniors, along with
Travis Somersall, honored before the match on Senior Night.
