Volleyballers host John Brown in semis Wednesday

The Wayland Baptist volleyball team will host John Brown University (Ark.) in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Hutcherson Center.

The Pioneers (27-7), ranked the equivalent of 26th in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, won their first-round match on Saturday over St. Gregory's, 25-15, 25-16, 25-16. John Brown (22-14), seeded fourth, advanced by defeating fifth-seeded Southwestern Assemblies of God University, 25-11, 25-17, 28-26.

Wayland swept JBU during the regular season, winning in Arkansas on Oct. 17, 26-24, 25-23, 25-16, after surviving at home on Sept. 19, 23-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-23, 15-10.

The winner advances to the championship match. If Wayland participates, the Pioneers will host the match by virtue of being the SAC regular-season champion and No. 1 seed. Match time would be at 2 p.m. against either second-seeded Oklahoma City University or Texas Wesleyan, who play Wednesday night in Oklahoma City.

The SAC Tournament winner receives an automatic bid into the NAIA National Championships.
