Box Score AUSTIN – Wayland Baptist struck first but couldn't get another goal as the Pioneer women's soccer team dropped its season-opener to Huston-Tillotson here Sunday afternoon, 3-1.
"We've got work to do," Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey said.
Pioneer senior
Tori Nimtz got the day off to a good start when she notched the first goal of the 2015 season just three minutes into the action. After the ball was pinged around in front of the box, Nimtz took a pass from Bell and pushed it through the posts for a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately for Wayland, that was all of the offense.
Wayland took its 1-0 lead into halftime, but Huston-Tillotson tied it early in the second half on a penalty kick following a foul on the Pioneers inside the box.
The Lady Rams notched the go-ahead goal on a breakaway then got an insurance score with about 10 minutes left. Wayland goalkeeper
Bailey Stengler came out to provide support on a 1v1 and the Lady Ram forward toe-poked it over her head.
"We had several opportunities but just couldn't make them pay," Posey said.
Huston-Tillotson, which went 10-8 last season including 7-2 in the Red River Athletic Conference, improved to 2-0. The Lady Rams won their season-opener over Mary-Hardin Baylor, also 3-1.
Wayland next plays in Victoria at 2 p.m. Friday against Houston-Victoria, then again at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6 in Houston against St. Thomas.
"We're going to keep working," Posey said.
The Pioneers play their home-opener at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11 against Emporia St. (Kan.).
