Box Score VICTORIA – Houston-Victoria recorded four goals in less than 14 minutes late in Friday's match, denying Wayland Baptist what would have been a big road win in men's soccer action, 5-2.
After the Jaguars scored the first goal of the match just 19 seconds in, the Pioneers tied it on a goal by
Taval Whittaker at the 21:32 mark off a free kick from the top of the box.
Jonathan Luna put the Pioneers ahead with a goal in the 30
th minute, assisted by
Yago Xavier.
The score remained 2-1 for the next 40-plus minutes, but then the Jaguars made up for lost time by registering four quickies. Houston-Victoria (1-1-0), which lost its season-opener to No. 18 USAO, 1-0, scored at 71:30, 75:02, 80:29 and 85:10. Miguel Cruz scored two of the goals.
The Jaguars outshot Wayland, 17-13, with a dozen shots on goal compared to eight for the Pioneers. Whittaker was credited with six shots, four of which were on target.

The Pioneers return to the pitch at 5 p.m. Sunday against St. Thomas, which received preseason Top 25 votes. Thus far, the Celts (0-1-0) have lost to Houston Baptist, 5-1 in a scrimmage, and Mid-America Christian, 3-2 in double overtime. St. Thomas hosts Southwestern Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Saturday.
