Box Score
The Wayland Baptist women's soccer team excelled late in its Sooner Athletic Conference match Tuesday afternoon against Bacone College, scoring four goals in a span of just nine minutes to achieve a 5-1 victory.
Â
Wayland (4-7-2, 3-3-0 SAC) got a quick goal just 3½ minutes into the match. The unassisted goal was scored by
Caddie Boline, her first of the season.
Â
Neither team scored the rest of the half, and Wayland – despite dominating play – clung to its 1-0 lead. Then that evaporated when Bacone's Kallie Smith scored some 10 minutes into the second half following a corner kick, evening the score at 1-all.
Â
"We had to give a goal away before the fire got lit under us," Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey said.
Â
Then from the 79:55 mark to the 88:49 mark, Wayland erupted for four more goals.
Gabrielle Munoz,
Jazmin Zarate and Guadalupe Leyva all put in goals assisted by
Chelsea Beaubouef. Leyva also scored a second, unassisted goal.
Â
"If we had played the first 70 minutes like we played the last 20, I'm not sure what the difference would have been," Posey said.
Â
Wayland outshot Bacone, 30-2. The Lady Warriors had just one shot on-goal compared to WBU's 11 from eight different players.
Wayland's
Bailey Stengler split time in goal with
Erin Moon and recorded the win as Stengler was recognized along with Virignia Norwood on Senior Day.
Â
Posey was proud of the way his team finished but noted that in their upcoming conference match they can't afford to start as slowly as they did Tuesday. That match comes against No. 19 John Brown University (12-1-1, 6-0-0) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hilliard Field, Wayland's final regular-season home outing. John Brown, which downed Bacone 15-0 earlier this season, defeated Southwestern Christian on Tuesday, 2-1.
Â
The Pioneers will be in Bethany, Okla., on Oct. 25 to play Southwestern Christian before winding up the regular season Oct. 29 at Oklahoma City University.
