Pioneers clobber Bacone on Senior Day

Box Score
In the next-to-last regular-season home match of the year, the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team continued to roll in Sooner Athletic Conference play Tuesday night at Hilliard Field, defeating Bacone College, 5-1.
The lopsided win extended Wayland's streak to eight consecutive matches without a loss, including seven victories.
Before the match, the Pioneers (9-3-2, 5-0-1 SAC) honored nine seniors – Angel Aguilera, Ezequiel Amestoy, Mohammad Chahine, D'Angelo Garcia, Matthew Lowndes, Javier Parry, Taval Whittaker, Yago Xavier and Abel Yemane – during Senior Day festivities.
"I was really happy all the seniors got to play," WBU coach Cristhian Ospina said. "They're one of the main reasons why we're playing great. They're playing for everything right now and slowly realizing that we can make it happen as far as winning conference and making nationals.
"We'll definitely miss them when they graduate, but I'm really happy to have them here."
Wayland again put on a tremendous showing, this time against the Warriors (6-6-0, 2-4).
The blitz started in the seventh minute of action with James Quinn's first goal of the season. That was followed five minutes later by Xavier, who reached the net on a deflection.
Guillermo Deal scored the third and final goal of the half in the 22nd minute. It was his eighth goal of the season and tied for team lead.
"We started off strong and took care of business," Ospina said of the Pioneers' fast start.
The onslaught continued after the half with goals from Whittaker (49th minute) and Parry (66th minute) to seal the deal. It was Whittaker's eighth and Parry's sixth goals of the season.
Whittaker is tied with Deal for most goals on the team this season and became the all-team leading scorer for the Pioneers with 19, passing former Pioneer David Neuberth's total of 18.
"I'm really happy for him," Ospina said of Whittaker.
Freshman Luke Holt made his first start of the year for junior João Souza, who is out with an injury, and recorded five saves, including a stop on a penalty kick. Bacone scored its lone goal on a PK.
"He did a great job," Ospina said. "We have depth on the bench. Whoever gets hurt, we will have someone there as good or better."
The Pioneers will play their last home regular-season match against No.12 John Brown (Ark.) at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Golden Eagles (10-1-2, 5-0-1) tied Southwestern Christian (Okla.) Tuesday night, 1-1 in double overtime. The tie means Wayland and John Brown are tied atop the league standings.
"We have everything in our hands, but we have to stay humble and get ready for this game," Ospina said. "We have to be ready for them."
