Box Score BETHANY, Okla. – Looking to get a win and secure their position in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team instead dropped a 1-0 decision to Southwestern Christian here Tuesday afternoon, leaving the Pioneers' post-season up in the air with one match left in the regular season.
"Today wasn't our best effort, but the girls played a solid game," Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey said. "It was just one of those games when everything you try is a little bit off."
Southwestern Christian (5-11, 3-5 SAC) scored the match's lone goal with just under 20 minutes left in the contest. Simone Keating corralled a loose ball in the box and booted it in from the left side. It was Keating's second goal of the season.
"She made a couple of ice dribble moves and took the shot, and the ball went under (WBU keeper
Bailey Stengler's) hands," Posey said.
Wayland (4-9-2, 3-5) got off nine shots, two of which were on-goal, both by
Valeria Garcia.
"It was a different style of game today. We had several opportunities. In fact, I thought we were in possession more and might have had better opportunities (than Southwestern Christian)," Posey said. "But everything we did there was always a toe poke at the last minute.
"Everything that needed to go our way didn't."
Garcia took three shots for Wayland while
Alyson Claybourne and
Chelsea Beaubouef had two each.
Lupita Leyva and
Gabrielle Munoz had one shot each.
"We had three or four really good chances toward the end, but couldn't find the back of the net," Posey said.
Stengler recorded six saves as seven of Southwestern Christian's 13 shots were on target.
With a win Tuesday, Wayland had a decent shot at finishing fourth in the standings and hosting a first-round match in the SAC Tournament. Now, the Pioneers' playoff hopes are not known.
"It's kind of crazy to think we had a chance to finish fourth and now, after one loss, we're not guaranteed even getting in," Posey said. "We've got to put this one behind us and have a short memory and go do everything we can Saturday at Oklahoma City."
Wayland, which has been blanked in four of its last five outings, ends the regular season back on the road against Oklahoma City University (5-9, 3-4) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
"We have to have a tie or a win on Saturday. If we don't, I don't know if we get in," Posey said.
Prior to OCU's match later today with USAO (9-6-1, 4-2-1), the Pioneers are tied for sixth place in the SAC with Southwestern Christian and Mid-America Christian (6-8-1, 3-5), a half-game behind OCU and a half-game ahead of ninth-place Southwestern Assemblies of God University (7-9, 2-5).
"We just have to get the job done Saturday," Posey said.
