Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY -- Regular-season Sooner Athletic Conference play came to an end -- but the season didn't -- for the Wayland Baptist's women's soccer team after the Pioneers fell Saturday afternoon to Oklahoma City University, 1-0.
WBU (4-10-2, 3-6 SAC) ended up in a three-way tie for seventh place in the conference with Southwestern Christian and Southwestern Assemblies of God. Because those three teams split against each other (WBU beat SAGU but lost to SCU, and SAGU defeated SCU), seeding for the conference tournament came down to goal differential in matches between the teams involved. SCU earned the seventh seed due to having a three-goal differential vs. WBU and SAGU. Wayland secured eighth place thanks to a 2-1 win over SAGU. The top eight teams proceed to the conference tournament, so SAGU was left out of the mix.
Wayland will play in Arkansas against No.19 John Brown next Friday, Nov. 4
in then opening round. The Golden Eagles are ranked first in the conference. In its last matchup, the Golden Eagles defeated the Pioneers, 5-0.
"We are going to have to play near perfectly. We have the talent and capability, but we will have to create opportunities and make the most of them, and play great defense," WBU coach
Shiloh Posey said about his team's chances against JBU.
Against OCU, Wayland was outshot by the Stars (7-9, 3-4), 9-5. Of Wayland's five shots, four were on goal. Those shots were taken by
Zeltzin Gutierrez,
Chelsea Beaubouef,
Anika Munoz-Perez, and
Alyson Claybourne.
WBU's goalkeeper
Bailey Stengler recorded four saves.
"They played pretty well," Posey said about his team. "Things didn't bounce our way."
