Box Score SHAWNEE, Okla. –
Lupita Leyva scored 2½ minutes into overtime to lift Wayland Baptist to a 1-0 victory over St. Gregory's University in Sooner Athletic Conference women's soccer action here Tuesday afternoon.
The Pioneers (3-5-2, 2-1-0 SAC) and Cavaliers (5-5-0, 1-2-0) played to a scoreless tie through 90 minutes of regulation. After WBU goalkeeper
Bailey Stengler saved a shot by St. Greg's a minute into extra time, Leyva recorded her second goal of the season to win it.
"I wish they could be pretty all the time, but sometimes a win is a win and you're just grateful for the 'W' at the end of the day," Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey said.
On the match's lone goal, Jazmine Zarate took the ball near midfield, breaking from the left wing and getting the ball to Leyva who dribbled to the inside. The ball deflected off a defender's foot, bounced up and came down at Leyva's feet where she took one more touch to the right into the box before firing.
The ground shot sailed just out of the SGU keeper's reach into the bottom right of the goal.
"It was a nice pass from Jazmine from the midfield, and Lupita made a good individual effort. She was able to finish really calmly," Posey said.
It marked the third win in four outings for Wayland and the first road victory in four tries for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers outshot St. Greg's, 18-6, including six shots on-goal to four for the Cavaliers.
Chelsea Beaubouef got off six shots, including three on target, to lead the Pioneers.
"It was one of those days," Posey said. "We outshot them pretty significantly and there were times we dominated possession but couldn't get the ball in the goal. We also gave away some pretty good opportunities that we shouldn't have, so I'm grateful we were able to defend those.
"The girls did a good job of maintaining their composure and continuing to battle. Ultimately, we gave ourselves enough chances that one of them went in for us."
Wayland returns home for its next match against Science and Arts of Oklahoma (5-5, 1-1), which hosted Bacone later Tuesday.
"We've got a tough one on Saturday, so we'll go home and try to get all of the rest we can then hope the home environment helps us play a really good game against a really good USAO team," Posey said.
The Drovers opened conference with a 2-1 road loss to Southwestern Christian before bouncing back with a 6-1 home victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University.
After its match, Wayland stood in third place in the league standings, behind No. 24 John Brown (8-1-1, 2-0-0) and Texas Wesleyan (5-4-0, 2-0-0) and a half-game ahead of USAO, Mid-America Christian and Oklahoma City.
"It's nice that we're in the mix," Posey said. "Every win is a good win and a necessary win."
