"We got up by 20 points early and we were able to maintain it throughout the course of the game," WBU coach
Ty Harrelson said.
"Josh shot the ball well," Harrelson said. "Our team did a good job of looking for him once he hit a few."
In the second half, Wayland kept its foot on the gas and scored four more points than it put up in the first half to keep the Eagles at a distance.
Josh Throns nailed six 3-pointers and led the Pioneers with 33 points while
Maurice Redmond hit four 3s and ended with 21 points, including 16 in the first half.
Louis Timms notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman
Russell Harrison also reached double figures with 10.
Guard
Tyrone Davis played in his first game as a Pioneer, scoring four points with a couple of rebounds in five minutes of action.
"It was a great team effort," Harrelson said.
WBU shot 51 percent from the field (37-of 71) and 40 percent from behind the arc (13-of-32), and committed just 10 turnovers.
The Pioneers stay on the road for two weekend contests in Gunnison, Colo., against NCAA Division II schools, first playing at 8:30 p.m. (CST) Friday against Western State Colorado and then at 6 p.m. Saturday against Colorado Mesa.
"They look like a very fundamental team," Harrelson said of Western State Colorado. "We need to get wins on the road."
