After scoring the most points by a Wayland Baptist Pioneer this century,
Marshall Nelson has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Â
Nelson scored 43 points in the No. 21 Pioneers' 102-99 overtime victory Saturday over Sul Ross State. In 38 minutes, the 6-foot-2 junior guard from Perth, Australia, made 9-of-16 field goals (56 percent), including 3-of-7 3-pointers, and hit 22-of-25 free throws (88 percent). He also had three rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Â
Nelson's 43 points matches the most points scored by a SAC player this season and were seven short of the Pioneers' all-time scoring record of 50 points set way back in the 1955-56 season by Roy Young against Sheppard Air Force Base.
Â
"(Marshall) was great. He had a great night," WBU assistant coach
Landon Hughey said.
Â
Nelson now is eligible for NAIA Player of the Week honors.
Â
It's the second SAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week recognition for Wayland this season.
Louis Timms was honored Nov. 21.
Â
The Pioneers (9-3) are off this week. They return to action Monday, Dec. 19 in San Antonio against Our Lady of the Lake (5-2), ranked the equivalent of 35
th in the NAIA. Wayland defeated the then 14
th-ranked Saints, 81-72, in Plainview on Nov. 22.
