Waters named SAC Player of Week

Wayland Baptist senior Robert Waters has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the first time this season a Pioneer has been honored.

A 6-foot-1 guard from Austin, Waters averaged 24.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals as the Pioneers knocked off No. 23 Oklahoma City (86-76) and No. 11 Mid-America Christian (118-96) in Hutcherson Center.

Waters was 19-of-19 from the free-throw line and 8-of-15 (53 percent) from the 3-point for the week. He made six 3s against MACU when the Pioneers set a new school record with 22. Thirteen of his free throws came against OCU when he played 37 minutes.

Waters now is eligible for NAIA National Player of the Week honors.

For the season, Waters leads the NAIA in 3-pointers made (99), ranks sixth in points per game (21.2) and is 11th in free throw percentage (.850).

In just two seasons at Wayland, Waters is primed to become the 38th member of the Pioneers' 1,000-point club. Currently, he has 940 points.

"I feel like Rob has really stepped up. He's letting the game come to him," WBU coach Ty Harrelson said. "It's natural for a senior to press a little bit. They want to win so bad and put a little bit of pressure on themselves. But Rob's playing really relaxed and smart basketball."

The Pioneers (16-9, 8-6 SAC) take their final regular-season road trip this week, playing Thursday night at USAO and Saturday afternoon at St. Gregory's.
