USAO cools off Pioneers in Chickasha, 110-98

Box Score CHICKASHA, Okla. – Fresh off back-to-back wins over Top 25 teams, the Wayland Baptist Pioneers were hoping to keep their momentum rolling with a fifth straight victory Thursday night over Science and Arts of Oklahoma. The Drovers, however, had different plans and topped Wayland for the second time this season, 110-98.
 
Wayland (16-10, 8-7 SAC) fell behind by as many as 13 points in the first half but quickly took the lead early in the second half. The Pioneers' largest lead was four points at 81-77 with 7:21 left, but the Drovers (13-10, 8-7) scored the next 10 points, and Wayland never bounced back.
 
Five days after making a school-record 22 3-pointers, the Pioneers got only five to fall, in 17 attempts (29 percent), against USAO.
 
Robert Waters scored 27 points to lead six Pioneers in double figures. Anietie Jack got 17 off the bench and was followed by Jordon Johnson with 16, Maurice Redmond with 15, Marshall Nelson with 11 and Jordan Tolbert with 10.
 
Two players combined for 66 points for USAO as Taran Buie finished with 35 and David Tucker 33. The Drovers made 39-of-55 free throws, and Buie (12-of-14) and Tucker (10-of-12) made the majority. 
 
The Pioneers also shot well from the foul stripe, hitting 31-of-39 with Waters going 9-of-10 and Johnson 8-of-10. Five Wayland played fouled out as the Pioneers were whistled for 37 fouls.
 
USAO, which defeated Wayland on Jan. 14 in Plainview, 98-92, shot 54 percent from the field (31-of-57), including 9-of-25 (36 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc. The Drovers out-rebounded Wayland, 40-34. Johnson led WBU with six boards, while Dedrain Parmer got 10 for USAO, in addition to 13 points.
 
Wayland takes the court for the final time on the road during the regular-season at 3 p.m. Saturday in Shawnee, Okla., against St. Gregory's (8-15, 3-12). The Pioneers beat the Cavaliers in their first matchup Jan. 7 in Plainview, 105-90. St. Greg's, which beat USAO 94-86 on Saturday, fell to No. 7 Texas Wesleyan on Thursday night in Fort Worth, 106-76.
