For the second time this season, Wayland Baptist's
Rossanna Ramos has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Defender of the Week.
Ramos' latest honor comes on the heels of the Pioneers' three-match road sweep last weekend, including conference victories over Texas Wesleyan and Southwestern Assemblies of God University as well as a non-conference win over Oklahoma Wesleyan. After a tough non-conference schedule, it is the longest win streak of the season for Wayland (9-7 overall, 2-0 SAC).
A senior from Catano Puerto Rico, in her second season at WBU, Ramos averaged 5.87 digs in the 15 sets (Wayland also lost in five to Texas-Permian Basin last week).
Ramos recorded 24 digs against UTPB for her second-highest total of the season.
WBU coach
Jim Giacomazzi credited Ramos and teammate
Alex Wood for a key adjustment in the win over Texas Wesleyan.
"We made some adjustments in our defense when they were trying to take advantage of us being out of position. Rossanna and Alex made adjustments and we were able to pick up some balls where they were scoring points."
Ramos also was named SAC Defender of the Week after the first week of the season.
The Pioneers – who are tied with No. 18 Oklahoma City, Southwestern Christian and John Brown atop the league standings with 2-0 records – stay on the road this week to face St. Gregory's (7-7, 1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday in Shawnee, Okla., then Mid-America Christian (4-3, 0-2) at 11 a.m. Saturday in Oklahoma City.
