Box Score
The Wayland Baptist men's soccer team failed to score in Friday's matchup at Hilliard Field against Our Lady of Lake and went down by a score of 1-0.
Â
The Pioneers (2-3-1) and the Saints (3-2) played evenly throughout the first half with both teams holding each other to limited shots, OLLU with four and WBU with three.
Â
The match's lone goal came in the second half…and unfortunately the Pioneers didn't make it.
Â
Saints junior Hugo Plascencia took his only opportunity at the goal and made it count with a strike in the 36th minute.
Â
The Pioneers had a few opportunities to counter soon after.
Â
Senior
Javier Parry hooked right a one-on-one shot, then freshman
Guillermo Deal hit the cross bar for the potential game-tying goal. Â
Â
"We didn't finish our chances and they took advantage of theirs," WBU coach
Cristhian Ospina said. "We paid for it."
Â
The Saints outshot Wayland, 15-11, and had five corner kicks to the Pioneers' one.
Â
"We were still mentally tired from our last game (a 2-2 tie with University of the Southwest on Thursday)," Ospina said. "We weren't organized and the team effort wasn't what I was expecting."
Â
The match was reduced to two 35-minute halves due to the late start of the preceding women's match because of lightning.
Â
Next up for the Pioneers will be the University of St. Thomas (4-2) at Hilliard Field at 3 p.m. Monday. In their last meeting, the Pioneers and Celts tied, 2-2.
Â
Ospina said he will make a few adjustments to give the Pioneers the best chance to win.
Â
"They are the best team in the Red River Athletic Conference," he said. "We have to come out strong for this really hard game."
