Box Score
After some hotly-contested bouts in their last few outings, the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team earned another blow-out victory Saturday night at Hilliard Field against Paul Quinn College, 8-0.
Â
The win marked the most-lopsided shutout in program history – bettering a 6-0 win over Mid-America Christian in 2013 – and was the second eight-goal win this season, matching a 9-1 rout of Huston-Tillotson.
Â
WBU coach
Cristhian Ospina, who mentioned his team needing to play strong in the first half to eliminate drama in the second, got his wish as the Pioneers (4-3-1) came out aggressive and ready to strike in the first-ever meeting of the teams.
Â
"We were hungry and we wanted to show out," Ospina said. "I'm thankful for the overall effort of the team."
Â
Â
The Tigers (2-5) were held to four shots in the first half while WBU launched 18, connecting on four goals. Two scores came from freshman
Guillermo Deal, the first in the sixth minute and the second in the 43rd minute. Deal now leads the team in goals with four.
Â
Senior
Ezequiel Amestoy (25th minute) and sophomore
Ernesto Benitez (29th minute) scored the other two.
Â
After that, it was smooth sailing for Wayland.
The Pioneers put up four more goals in the second half from juniors
Jonathan Luna in the 57th minute and
Ryan Montgomery in the 78th minute, sophomore
Emmanuel Emmas in the 79th minute, and senior
D'Angelo Garcia in the 89th minute.
Â
Coming off the bench, junior
David Herrera assisted on three goals, matching a program record.
Â
The Pioneers begin Sooner Athletic Conference play 5 p.m. Tuesday at home against Southwestern Assemblies of God University. In their last matchup, the Lions (7-0-1) defeated Texas A&M-Texarkana, 5-0
Â
Even after Saturday's performance, Ospina wants his team to remain humble entering SAC action.
Â
"It's a totally different game," Ospina said. "We have to be confident in what we can do and we need to fix a couple of things defensively."Â
