Wayland Baptist goalkeeper João Souza has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Defender of the Week.
Â
Souza, a 6-foot-2 junior from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, recorded five saves as he helped the Pioneers to a pair of wins last week, 3-2 over St. Thomas and 8-0 over Paul Quinn.
Â
Against Paul Quinn on Saturday night, Souza recorded a pair of saves and helped the Pioneers to the largest shutout in team history. It was the program's second-most goals scored ever, behind only a 9-1 win over Huston-Tillotson earlier this season.
Â
Souza recorded three saves against St. Thomas.
Â
It's the first time this season a WBU soccer player has been recognized as conference player of the week.
Â
Offensive Player of the Week is Micah Day of Texas Wesleyan. The junior forward from Haiti scored three goals and added an assist in matches against Paul Quinn, Wiley College and University of the Southwest. Day has scored in six of the Rams' nine matches.
Â
The Pioneers (4-3-1) open SAC play by hosting Southwestern Assemblies of God University (8-0-1) at 5 p.m. Tuesday, after the women's match at 3. Wayland then wraps up a seven-match home stand at 4 p.m. Saturday against Texas Wesleyan (3-6-0).
