The Wayland Baptist women's soccer team opened Sooner Athletic Conference play Tuesday afternoon at Hilliard Field by defeating the Southwestern Assemblies of God Lady Lions, 2-1.
"The effort level today from all the girls that played was tremendous," Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey said after the second straight win for Wayland (2-4-2, 1-0-0 SAC).
Posey was extremely proud of his player's teamwork throughout the match.
"We had three or four people doing what we've asked them to do in practice as a group, instead of just one person," Posey said as he described how Wayland's pair of goals came. "As the ball moves forward, everyone is doing their job. Those are the kinds of opportunities that you create when a group moves together."
Early in the 59
th-minute, Nadine Jaimes scored for SAGU (6-4-0, 0-1-0), kicking the ball in high over WBU goalkeeper
Bailey Stengler's head.
After that, Wayland came up clutch by scoring two goals in a span of just three minutes.
The first was by
Chelsea Beaubouef in the 70
th minute, followed shortly by a goal by
Gabrielle Munoz in the 72
nd minute, assisted by Beaubouef.
They were the second goals of the season for both Beaubouef and Munoz, who also scored in Wayland's previous game, a 3-2 overtime victory over St. Thomas.
SAGU outshot WBU, 14-10, with Stengler credited with seven saves, including an amazing stop on a one-v-one just before the end of regulation. Wayland had eight on-goal shots.
"We've got some things that we can still work on. The competition is going to continue to be strong and we have to continue to improve and build on the things that we've done well," Posey said. "The girls did a great job. I'm really proud of them."
Wayland will play again at 2 p.m. Saturday against Texas Wesleyan at Hilliard Field. In last year's meeting, the teams tied, 2-2. The Lady Rams (5-4, 1-0), who opened conference play Tuesday at home with a 3-1 win over St. Gregory's.
