Box Score SHAWNEE, Okla. – St. Gregory's went on a late 10-2 run that helped the Cavaliers knock off Wayland Baptist in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball action here Thursday night, 69-62.
Wayland (13-8, 5-4 SAC), trying to bounce back from its first home loss of the season Saturday, led by a couple midway through the second half. It remained close at the 5:21 mark when St. Greg's (8-8, 4-5) held a 49-48 edge, and it was a four-point game with just under three minutes to go when things began to get away from the Pioneers.
After a 3-pointer by SGU's Michael Maras, Wayland misfired on its next two possessions then had a costly turnover. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, were converting on their end, pulling out to a 64-52 lead with under a minute to go.
The closest the Pioneers got after that was the final seven-point spread following a late 3-pointer by
Ruben Lopez.
WBU, which scored the first eight points of the game, got 22 points from
Russell Harrison and 10 each by
Maurice Redmond and Joshua Throns. SGU was paced by two subs, Michael Maras with 20 and Kilder Gonzalez with 19 and 10 rebounds.
The Pioneers shot 40 percent (21-of-53) from the field, including 25 percent (5-of-20) from 3-point range, and 68 percent (15-of-22) from the free-throw line. Wayland outrebounded SGU, 39-35, but was hurt by 21 turnovers, six more than the Cavaliers, who hit 21-of-29 foul shots (72 percent).
Wayland closes out the first half of SAC play on Saturday in Chickasha, Okla., where the Pioneers take on Science and Arts of Oklahoma at 2 p.m. USAO (9-11, 4-5) dropped a close decision at No. 8 Oklahoma City on Thursday, 95-93.
