OTTAWA, Kan. – Wayland Baptist wrestling picked up a couple of nice wins over Ottawa here Saturday as the seventh-ranked Pioneer women won, 30-18, while the 13
th-ranked WBU men prevailed, 46-9.
The men got off to a slow start, losing their first two matches at 149 and 157 pounds, but then came on strong to take the final eight.
"We started off slowly today. We have to work on coming out and getting that momentum," WBU coach
Aaron Meister said. "We expect our guys to go out and attack and score points and get the momentum for us, and that didn't happen.
"After those first two we got to doing what we've been talking about doing and that's scoring points and separating ourselves in the match…dominating."
The turnaround started with pins by
Romen Correa at 165 pounds and
Jose Alvarez at 174. Heavyweight
Tim McCutcheon and
Demarco Speller (133) also pinned their opponents.
Wayland evened its duals record to 7-7.
In the women's competition, Wayland won seven of the 10 matches.
Mayra Ramirez (109),
Tarkyia Mensah (123) and
Brittany Bates (136) all won with pins to help the Pioneers improve their dual record to 11-1.
"The girls did a good job. They continue to be confident in what we're doing and improve in areas we're concerned with," Meister said.
The coach said he was pleased with how his team team responded without having senior leader
Tamyra Mensah in the lineup. Mensah won a competition in Russia earlier this week.
"Tamyra is a big part of this team and usually leads them through warm-ups and is very vocal. But the girls still had a very business-like performance without her and did what I knew they could do and what I expect of them."
Both the WBU men and women close out their dual competitions with their final home outing of the season at noon Saturday, Feb. 4 against Bacone. The event will feature Senior Day as well as the presentation of the
Johnny Cobb Endowed Scholarship.
"That will be a special day," Meister said. "On the mat, we want to get ready for the post-season and get ready to bring home some hardware."
