After posting a shutout in his first collegiate game in goal, Wayland Baptist keeper
Ryan Montgomery has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Montgomery, a 5-foot-11 senior from Killyleagh, Ireland, came to the rescue when the 24
th-ranked Pioneers found themselves short on goalkeepers for their season-opening match against Hardin-Simmons on Saturday.
Along with a strong defensive effort from his teammates and a possession-control offense, Montgomery was credited with a shutout as the Pioneers prevailed over the Cowboys at Hilliard Field, 4-0.
Normally a defender, Montgomery trained as a keeper for only a couple of days before the match.
"I'm really proud of Ryan for stepping in goal and helping us," WBU coach
Cristhian Ospina said. "The defense played very well. We had possession of the ball most of the game."
The Pioneers are back in action at 3 p.m. Friday at home against Texas-Permian Basin.
