High temps tough on short-handed Pioneers

Box Score AUSTIN – High temperatures and an injury-depleted roster proved a tough combination as the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to unbeaten Huston-Tillotson here Saturday afternoon.

WBU coach Shiloh Posey said temperatures were in the mid-90s, and with only three substitutes the Pioneers (0-5) had a difficult time keeping up with Huston-Tillotson (4-0), whose previous wins included victories over McMurry (4-0) and Southwestern Assemblies of God University (4-1).

"I'm extremely proud of their effort. They gave every ounce of effort they had," Posey said of his team, which due to injuries is reduced to 14 players.

"The girls played hard, but we made a couple of mistakes they capitalized on," Posey said.

"The score was not indicative of the game."

Wayland twice put the ball in the goal, but both were disallowed. On one the official said the HTU keeper had control of the ball before it was knocked in, and on the second it was ruled the Pioneers were offside.

"We're creating more opportunities to score."

Statistics were not immediately available.

Wayland next plays in San Antonio against Our Lady of the Lake University at noon Monday in its final non-conference outing. The Pioneers then have an eight-day layoff before Sooner Athletic Conference play begins Sept. 26 at home against Mid-America Christian.

"We're making progress and looking forward to getting back home and opening conference," Posey said. "We're doing all we can to hang on and get through this rough patch."
