Box Score SAN ANTONIO – After a pair of tight 1-0 victories, the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team spread its wings a big here Monday as the No. 21 Pioneers rolled to a 4-1 victory over Our Lady of the Lake University.
It was the fifth straight win for Wayland (6-1) and the Pioneers now prepare for the start of Sooner Athletic Conference play. WBU will begin defense of its first-ever SAC title at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26 at Hilliard Field against Mid-America Christian University (5-1).
That match will be the first at home for the Pioneers in more than three weeks after playing their last four on the road. The Evangels are coming off their first loss of the season last Friday to Houston-Victoria, 2-1 in overtime. MACU hosts Sterling College (Kan.) on Saturday.
Against OLLU (1-4), a team that played unbeaten Oklahoma City University (6-0) to within 1-0 in its season-opener, Wayland held a slim 1-0 lead at halftime before blowing it open in the second half.
Federico Ucar opened the scoring on a header in the 26
th minute, assisted by
Gavin Shiels. Shiels also earned on assist on Wayland's second goal, which came just over a minute into the second half on a shot by
Ricardo Ramos.
The Saints cut it to 2-1 close to the 60-minute mark on a penalty kick goal by Roger Rizzi, but it took Wayland just 20 seconds to stretch the lead back out to a two-goal margin when
Ross Brown headed in a ball assisted by
Lochlan Reus.
Cooper Gaypia capped off the scoring with an assist by
Alex Castillo almost 83 minutes in.
Of Wayland's 21 shots, 16 were on-goal Ucar getting four of them. Brown added three on-goal shots while Gaypia, Shiels and Ramos had two each.
OLLU was on the mark with three of its 10 shots. Both saves were picked up in the first half by
Ziggy Camejo, who just missed his third shutout in as many outings but still improved to 3-0.
