Two days after a less-than-stellar showing in suffering their first loss of the season, the Wayland Baptist men's soccer team got back on track in a big way, posting an 8-0 victory over Paul Quinn College on Sunday afternoon at Hilliard Field.

The Pioneers (2-1) got off 39 shots as they matched the final score by which they beat the Tigers (1-2) last year, also at The Bowl.
"I'm happy we won, happy all the guys got to play, and happy they got to score," Wayland coach
Cristhian Ospina said. "We improved, but Paul Quinn came from playing a game (against Western Texas in Snyder) the day before, so they were a little bit tired. That was an advantage for us, so we have to be realistic."

Ricardo Ramos and Luis Almeida both scored twice, with Almeida's goals coming in the first half and Ramos connecting on both of his in the final 45 minutes of play.

James Westfield scored the afternoon's first goal, his second of the young season, just over 14 minutes into play, off an assist from
Alex Castillo. Almeida got in the next two, assisted by Gavin Shiels and Lochlan Reus, as WBU took a 3-0 intermission lead.

Ten minutes into the second half, Ramos found the back of the net on a free kick from 35 yards out. Cooper Gaypia scored his team-high third goal of the season 12 minutes later for a 5-0 lead, then Ramos connected again on a free kick from 25 yards away.

The final two goals came on kicks from Stefano Pesce, assisted by
Raheem Fleming, and
Jonathan Luna, their first of the season.

Hector Haros, making his first start of the season in goal for WBU, was credited with four saves as PQC got off seven shots.

Twenty-three Pioneers saw action in the match, and 15 of them took shots. Gaypia and Reus fired seven shots apiece, and all but one of Gaypia's was on target.

WBU goes on the road for the first time this season to take on Wiley College at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 at Toyota Stadium, the 18,000-seat home of MLS's FC Dallas in Frisco. Wiley is 1-1 on the season, with their win coming over Texas Wesleyan, 1-0. The Wildcats host St. Gregory's in Marshall on Friday.
"We saw a lot of good things, but we have to stay humble for our next game. We have a really, really hard game ahead of us," Ospina said. "We want to perform really well;, so we have to work really hard this week. We have to see the good things so we can keep doing them and fix the mistakes that we have.
"We're not at the place we want to be yet."
