GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Top-ranked Wayland Baptist secured a season-opening win over Colorado Mesa University in women's wrestling here Saturday. The Pioneers outlasted the first-year Mavericks by a convincing margin, 37-14.
Wayland picked up wins in seven of the 10 matches, including pins in the two heaviest weights by
Breanna Jennings at 170 pounds and
Paige Baynes at 191 pounds.
Jathiya Isaac prevailed at 123 by 10-0 tech fall while
Vanessa Ceja won by 11-10 decision at 155.
WBU picked up three forfeit wins.
Twelve exhibition matches also were held.
Next for the Pioneers is the Blue-Gold Duals at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Laney Center. That's one of just three opportunities to watch the wrestlers at home all season, along with the Wayland Invitational on Dec. 1 and a dual against Lyon College Jan. 26.
