Box Score DALLAS –
James Westfield scored one goal and assisted on the other as top-ranked Wayland Baptist recorded its third shutout win as many outings Saturday afternoon at MoneyGram Soccer Park, defeating Wiley College, 2-0.
The match was scoreless until Westfield, last season's top scorer for the Pioneers, recorded his first goal of 2018 with an assist
Alexis Castillo in the 55
th minute.
Playing its first road game of the year, Wayland picked up an all-important second goal in the 73
rd minute when Westfield assisted
Luis Almeida on his second goal of the year.
It was the second loss of the season for Wiley (0-2) to a Sooner Athletic Conference opponent after also falling to Texas Wesleyan in Fort Worth in its season-opener, 5-0.
The Pioneers outshot Wiley, 26-7, including 13-3 shots on-goal. Eleven different players took shots for WBU, led by
Ricardo Ramos and Mollie Karpeh Jr. with five each and
Chris Eduardo with four. It was newcomer Karpeh's first action of the season. Ramos, Almeida and
Federico Ucar had a pair of on-goal shots apiece to contribute to Wayland's total of 13.
Ziggy Camejo recorded three saves as he recorded his second shutout of the season.
Although it later had to forfeit the win, Wayland defeated Wiley College by the same score last season when the teams also met at a neutral site in Dallas, Toyota Stadium.
The Pioneers will play another neutral-site match in their next outing against what could be their toughest test of the regular season, No. 7 Columbia College (Mo.). That match is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Mohawk Soccer Complex in Tulsa, Okla. Columbia and Wayland tied, 1-1, in last season's national quarterfinals, but the Pioneers advanced on penalty kicks, 5-4. Columbia is 0-2 on the season with losses to Bellevue (Neb.), 3-2, and defending national runner-up, second-ranked Missouri Valley, 2-1.
