Wayland Baptist lost its No. 1 ranking as a result of its first setback of the season, but the Pioneers didn't slip far in the NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25. WBU is now No. 4.
Â
The defending national champion Pioneers had been a near unanimous No. 1 in the preseason and first regular-season polls of the season, earning 15 of 18 first-place votes.
Â
But Wayland – after winning its first three matches of the season by a combined score of 9-0 – lost to then No. 20 Columbia, Mo., by a score of 2-1 at a neutral site in Tulsa, Okla. Columbia jumped up four places to No. 16 in this week's poll.
Â
The Pioneers return to action for the first time since their loss to Columbia when they host Our Lady of the Lake at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hilliard Field. Like Wayland, the Saints sport a 3-1 record.
Â
After the men's match, the WBU women host University of the Southwest (N.M.) beginning at 5 p.m. USW is coached by former Pioneer soccer player
D'Angelo Garcia, a native of Artesia, N.M., who played at WBU for four years through the 2016 season.
The WBU women (3-1-1), who got off to their best start in program history after four matches, also will be looking to avenge their first loss of the season, 2-1 to Friends, Kan.
