Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Former Pioneer Garcia leads USW to victory

Wayland Baptist didn't win Wednesday's women's soccer match against the University of the Southwest (N.M.), but a former Wayland Pioneer did.

D'Angelo Garcia, who played soccer at Wayland for four seasons through 2016, is serving as interim head coach at Southwest, and his Mustangs prevailed over the Pioneers at Hilliard Field, 2-0.

"Individually there were some good efforts, but overall we didn't do what needed to be done," Wayland coach Shiloh Posey said.

The Pioneers (3-2-1) outshot the Mustangs (2-2) 19-4, but Wayland was shut out for the first time this season in dropping its second straight match.

"We did not have an extreme sense of urgency in a lot of places, especially after we were down," Posey said. "We have to find a drive that motivates us to finish when we have the opportunity and create that sense of urgency."

USW scored its first goal with six minutes left in the first half on a shot from 30 yards out that got chipped over Pioneer keeper Kaitlyn Brantzeg's head.

Posey said the goal was "absolutely preventable. It was a lack of concentration, lack of positioning…those kinds of things."

The coach said USW's second goal – on a corner kick with 10 minutes to go in the match that saw a mass of players form in front of Wayland's net – also was preventable.

"We lost track of our runners, of our assignments, and obviously we paid for it. We didn't do what needed to be done."

Of Wayland's 21 shots, nine were on-goal. Taylor Moore got off nine shots all by herself, four of which were on-target. All three of Megan Attenborough's shots were on-goal.

"The first half was fairly competitive, at least the way we started. We had a couple of chances and didn't capitalize on them. We should have done better with those," Posey said.

"We panicked a bit when we didn't need to and were not disciplined in the way we should have been in finishing goals. At times we shot too soon.

"We just didn't take care of our business."

After going unbeaten in four road matches to open the season, the Pioneers are still in search for their first taste of victory at home. They'll try again at 2 p.m. Saturday against Texas-Permian Basin. UTPB is 1-3, having lost at home to Colorado Mesa (3-0) and Texas A&M International (3-2) and on the road to Lubbock Christian (1-0) before picking up its first win in its most recent match Sunday at New Mexico Highlands, 1-0.

"We have several things we need to fix between now and Saturday," Posey said. "We'll see on Saturday how those issues have been dealt with."
