Women's soccer has more school history in mind with trip to Fort Worth ahead

After realizing their first "win" over John Brown University, the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team has more school history in its sights.

The Pioneers will try to advance to the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament championship match for the first time when they take on Texas Wesleyan at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Fort Worth.
The seventh-seeded Pioneers (6-6-3) advanced out of the first round Saturday night in Siloam Springs, Ark., where they tied 13th-ranked, second-seeded John Brown 1-1 in double-overtime before winning the shootout, 4-2 on penalty kicks.

While it doesn't go in the books as a win, it is the first time Wayland has experienced anything but a loss, tie or shootout loss in 19 all-time meetings against the Golden Eagles.

The Pioneers don't have quite the dismal history against Texas Wesleyan, but it's close. In 13 meetings, Wayland has won twice and tied once. The latest of those victories came last season when the Pioneers prevailed at Hilliard Field, 1-0.

Wayland's only other win against TXWES came in their very first meeting in 2002. In between victories, Wayland had gone 0-9-1.

The Rams' latest win came a week ago in Fort Worth, 2-1.

The Pioneers gave up two tough goals, the first by Tameir Grosvenor just 28 seconds before halftime. The Pioneers recorded the equalizer when senior Taylor Moore notched her team-best 12th goal of the season in the 84th minute.

Just 50 seconds after Wayland tied it, Texas Wesleyan's Kristen Carter, who assisted on the first goal, scored the game-winner for the Rams.

The winner of Tuesday's rematch will advance to Friday's tournament championship against either fourth-seeded Mid-America Christian (12-4-1) or top-seeded, ninth-ranked Science & Arts of Oklahoma (18-1).

If Wayland wins Tuesday, it will be the Pioneers' first appearance in the title game. Wayland also got to the semifinals in 2013 and 2015, first falling to USAO, 2-1. Two years earlier, the Pioneers tied John Brown, 2-2, but stayed home after losing the shootout, 4-3.
