FORT WORTH – Wayland Baptist's men's and women's wrestling teams opened their seasons with a tri-match here Saturday, facing host Texas Wesleyan and Schreiner University. The fourth-ranked Pioneer women came up with a pair of wins while the Pioneer men, ranked the equivalent of 36
th in the NAIA, split matches.
Wayland's women dominated Schreiner, 36-5, while also handily took care of Texas Wesleyan, 29-14. In the other match, Texas Wesleyan got past Schreiner, 24-14.
In men's action, the Pioneers defeated Schreiner, 34-21, but fell to the Rams, 31-9. First-year TXWES also defeated Schreiner, 34-15.
The WBU men next participate in the Oklahoma City University Open on Saturday, while the women host Colorado Mesa at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Laney Center.
