ABILENE – Wayland Baptist raced to a 34-7 lead and was never challenged by Hardin-Simmons as the No. 6 Flying Queens won an exhibition game Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Complex, 88-48.
The Flying Queens (8-2), who were in control at the half 54-16, got five double-digit performers, led by
Morgan Bennett's 16 points on 7-of-8 field shooting.
Jenna Cooper and
Kelea Pool both put in 11 points while
Kambrey Blakey got 10 off the bench. Also off the bench, freshman Tayjanna McGehee-Pleasant pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Payton Brown delivered eight of Wayland's 26 assists, and Pool recorded four of the team's eight blocked shots.
Wayland shot 49 percent (35-of-72) from the field, including 9-of-23 (39 percent) from 3-point range.
The Flying Queens outrebounded the Cowgirls, 51-38.
HSU (7-3) shot just 27 percent (17-of-63), and only 16 percent (4-of-25) from beyond the arc. Jesyka Lee and Trinity Anderson led the NCAA Division III Cowgirls in scoring with seven each.
It was Wayland's first game in nine days and fifth straight win. The Flying Queens next play Thursday in Waxahachie as they return to Sooner Athletic Conference play against Southwestern Assemblies of God University (5-3, 1-1), which plays Monday at Paul Quinn College. The Lady Lions, who beat John Brown 69-59 and lost to Texas Wesleyan 76-66 so far in conference, defeated LSU-Shreveport, ranked the equivalent of No. 30, 69-59, in their most recent game Dec. 17.
Wayland is 1-1 in the SAC, having defeated Southwestern Christian, 73-50, and lost to No. 2 Oklahoma City, 70-46.
