GOODWELL, Okla. –
Kambrey Blakey pumped in a career-high 27 points as No. 6 Wayland had no trouble dispatching Oklahoma-Panhandle State in Sooner Athletic Conference play here Tuesday night, 87-64.
Wayland (22-4, 16-2
SAC), which jumped one spot in the
NAIA Top 25 released earlier in the day, led 25-14 after the first quarter and 48-28 at the half. The Flying Queens only outscored OPSU (12-12, 8-10) by three points in the second half, but the outcome was already decided by then. The Flying Queens' largest lead was 30.
Blakey's 27 points – two better than her previous-best – came on 64 percent shooting from the field (7-of-11) and featured 12-of-12 accuracy from the free-throw line where Wayland as a team was 20-of-22 (91 percent). That was a welcome sight for the team's up-and-down foul shooting, which in Saturday's 93-36 win over Bacone wound up just over 50 percent (17-of-33).
The Queens hit 47 percent (31-of-66) from the field and 25 percent (5-of-20) from long range, where the Lady Aggies made only 4-of-19 (21 percent).
Payton Brown followed Blakey with 11 points, followed by
Kaylee Edgemon with 10,
Maci Merket with nine,
Cailyn Breckel eight and
Kelea Pool seven. Brown led in rebounding with nine, followed by
Deborah VanDijk with eight.
Wayland, which defeated OPSU in Plainview earlier this season, 75-65, committed just nine turnovers, while OPSU had only 11. The Lady Aggies got 23 points from Addison Munsch and 17 from Taylor Acosta.
The contest marked the end of a three-game road swing for Wayland, which next hosts Southwestern Christian at 6 p.m. Thursday. Southwestern Christian (10-14, 7-11), coming off a 68-55 loss to Southwestern Assemblies of God on Saturday, lost to Wayland in Bethany earlier this season, 113-53.
The Flying Queens' final regular-season home game is at 2 p.m. Saturday against SAC lead, 10
th-ranked Oklahoma City. A win would put WBU, which defeated OCU on the road, 70-63, in the driver's seat for the conference crown.
