Wayland Baptist sweeps conference soccer defensive player of the week awards

Wayland Baptist swept Sooner Athletic Conference defensive player of the week honors in women's and men's soccer with goalkeepers Victoria Bonahoom and Gonzalo Santa being recognized for their performances last week.

Bonahoom, a 5-foot-6 senior from Westminster, Colo., who transferred to Wayland prior to the 2017 season from Trinidad State Junior College (Colo.), gave up an early goal but ended with a career-high 12 saves in the Pioneers' 2-1 win over Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. It was the program's first-ever win over the Saints in their fifth all-time meeting.

The Pioneers (2-0-1) can match last season's best-ever start to a season with a home win over Howard Payne starting at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Santa, a 5-foot-10 junior from Yecia Marcia, Spain, didn't allow a goal in 200 minutes of play as he helped the Pioneers to a 1-0-1 week with a scoreless, double-overtime tie with Our Lady of the Lake prior to a 4-0 road win over Huston-Tillotson. A transfer from Laredo College, Santa recorded seven saves against OLLU in his first action of the sason before recording five stoppers against Huston-Tillotson.

"Gonzalo was really key for us. He was very solid in goal, coming up with important saves," WBU coach Robert Ssejjemba said of Santa.

The Pioneers (3-0-1) next host Howard Payne at 6 p.m. Tuesday at The Bowl.
