WOLFFORTH – Hoping to win and secure the best start in program history, the Wayland Baptist women's soccer team instead suffered its first loss of the season here Friday, falling to NCAA Division II Lubbock Christian, 5-0.
"LCU has a good team, and we just got out-manned today," Wayland coach
Shiloh Posey said.
The match was moved from LCU to Frenship High School and delayed an hour after stormy weather moved through Lubbock.
Wayland (3-1-1) was looking to knock off the Lady Chaps (2-2) and surpass last year's 3-0-1 start, but LCU had different plans. The former Sooner Athletic Conference Lady Chaps scored in the 12
th minute and 24
th minute to go up 2-0 at halftime. They then added three more goals in the second half.
LCU outshot Wayland, 35-7, including 13-2 shots on-goal.
Taylor Moore and
Fortune Kede led the Pioneers with three shots each.
"(LCU) worked really hard and beat us to a lot of balls. They pushed on us offensively. We played a lot of defense today, and you can only play defense so long without things breaking sometimes," Posey said.
Freshman
Jessie Rivera, in her first collegiate start, recorded eight saves for the Pioneers, who are now 1-5-1 against LCU.
"I give credit to our girls for continuing to battle, but we got outplayed today pretty significantly, and the stats show that pretty obviously," Posey said. "It's a good reality check. We start conference on Tuesday and we're definitely ready to get back to our winning ways."
The match was the final tune-up before the start of SAC play for Wayland at 4 p.m. Tuesday against Oklahoma-Panhandle State at Hilliard Field. In their first year of playing soccer, the Aggies are 2-1, having beaten Texas College twice (1-0 and 3-2) while losing to Paul Quinn (4-3 in overtime) and Northwestern Oklahoma State (11-0). OPSU played Avila on Thursday; no result was available.
Posey concluded, "Today was a tough day, but sometimes lessons can be learned in these situations and we're going to do that as best we can and move forward from here."
