With two of his top players out with injury, Wayland Baptist coach
Shiloh Posey wasn't getting any sympathy from his counterpart from Oklahoma-Panhandle State, who – due to injuries and ineligibles – showed up at Hilliard Field for Tuesday's Sooner Athletic Conference opener with only nine players.
The result of the Aggies' taking the field two players down was the teams agreeing to shorten the match by a total of 20 minutes, but more importantly it resulted in a 10-0 Wayland victory that featured multiple program records broken by senior
Taylor Moore.
"It's great to start SAC play with a win, especially 10-0," Posey said.
Moore wound up scoring five goals to become the first Pioneer with more than three in a match, something that had been done nine times before, including by Moore last season. Moore also was credited with an assist as she shattered the record for points in a match with 11 (the previous mark of seven was one she shared with two others.) Finally, Moore tied the record of nine shots on-goal, first set by Kathleen Stewart in 2010.
WBU (4-1-1, 1-0 SAC) fired 47 shots, including 27 on goal, while the Aggies (2-3, 0-1 SAC) did not get off a single shot. The 47 shots tied a school record set in 2012 against Dallas Christian.
"Today was more about implementing some things we wanted to, as well as not being satisfied with mental mistakes, and not getting lazy in our decisions," Posey said. "We know that every game will be competitive, so we can't afford to let ourselves be complacent."
Coming off its first loss after matching the school record for best start to a season, it appeared Wayland would break the record for most goals in a match when the Pioneers scored eight in the first 25 minutes, including the first by Moore just 43 seconds in. WBU notched just two more goals after the 25
th minute to wind up two short of the record dozen scored against Dallas Christian in 2011.
Besides Moore, who now has seven for the season, scoring WBU's other five goals were
Kayla Ortiz,
Fortune Kede,
Justine Sandoval and
Mariah Leal, in addition to an own goal.
Sixteen different players got off shots for Wayland; 12 had shots on-goal.
"I'm glad every player on the team was able to contribute to the win, and was glad to see their success," Posey said. "I was happy to see our defense play well, and our offense score well.
"On the other side," Posey added, "I've been in the place of OPSU and have a tremendous amount of respect for the coach and the ladies that played for them today. To step on the field knowing you're down and battling all game says a lot for them."
Wayland now has a week off before its next match at home against Mid-America Christian (4-2, 0-0), which opens conference at home Friday against No. 12 USAO.
"I feel like we did the right things for the most part, but there is always work to be done and improvements we can make," Posey said. "We will continue to work to improve."
