WBU wins 10th straight, 79-50 over Langston

LANGSTON, Okla. – Wayland Baptist broke open a close game in the third quarter as the sixth-ranked Flying Queens defeated Langston in Sooner Athletic Conference play here Thursday night, 79-50.

Wayland never trailed in the game, although it took a bit before the Flying Queens took control. The Flying Queens led by just one, 22-21, but went on a 13-3 run over the final three minutes of the first half to take a 35-24 lead.

Wayland then scored the first nine points of the second half to go up by 20, 44-24. Cailyn Breckel hit a 3-pointer and another bucket to get the third-quarter run started.

The Queens' largest lead was 29 points.

It was the 10th straight win for Wayland (13-2, 6-1 SAC), while Langston (4-7, 2-5), coming off a 69-66 win over John Brown, failed to win its third in a row.

Reigning SAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week Jenna Cooper recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds, along with five assists. Kambrey Blakey and Kaylee Edgemon ended with 14 points each, while Kelea Pool chipped in eight points and nine rebounds. Payton Brown also provided nine boards and five assists.

Both teams struggled from 3-point range, with Wayland going 6-of-26 (23 percent) and Langston 2-of-13 (15 percent). Overall, the Flying Queens shot 37 percent (30-of-81) and Langston 24 percent (15-of-63), while at the free-throw line WBU shot 57 percent (13-of-23) and Langston 67 percent (18-of-27).

The Flying Queens dominated on the boards, grabbing 63 rebounds, including 23 offensive, compared to 44 for Langston. WBU was credited with 19 assists, while the Lions got just four.

Langston was led by Kaylie Mitchell with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Victoria Vickers added a dozen points.

Wayland is back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday in McPherson, Kan., against Central Christian (4-9, 1-5), which defeated Langston on Jan. 7, 79-73. Since then, the Tigers lost at John Brown, 99-63, and hosted Oklahoma-Panhandle State on Thursday.
