OKLAHOMA CITY – Wayland Baptist's eighth-ranked women defeated No. 10 Oklahoma City University, 26-18, while the Pioneer men fell to the 11
th-ranked Stars, 45-3, in dual wrestling action Friday at Abe Lemons Arena.
In the women's dual, Wayland captured five matches and OCU four, with one double-forfeit. Three of WBU's wins were by forfeit, as was one of OCU's.
Of the contested matches, fourth-ranked
Desiree Zavala scored a fall at 136 pounds, as did 18
th-ranked
Iman Thomas at 170 pounds. OCU also won twice by pin, at 130 pounds where Wayland's sixth-ranked
Amanda Alvarado was upset by No. 20 Mattison Parker, and at 191 where OCU's top-ranked Nkechinyere Nwankwo pinned No. 20
Katerina Pena.
The lone contested match not decided by fall was at 155 in a showdown between Wayland's top-ranked
Kaylynn Albrecht and OCU's second-ranked Rachel Watters. The match ended deadlocked at 6-all.
It was Wayland's second win of the season over the Stars, having won 30-15 on Jan. 11 at the NWCA National Duals in Louisville, Ky.
In the men's dual, the Pioneers picked up only one victory against the Stars, at 184 pounds where
Hunter McCarty earned a 7-6 decision.
Wayland next travels to Baldwin City, Kan., for a triangular at 5 p.m. Saturday against host Baker and Ottawa. It will be another tough competition for the Pioneer men as Baker is ranked sixth and Ottawa is receiving Top 25 votes. Ottawa's women's team is ranked 19
th.
