Mahelova, Pike recognized as Wayland Baptist Student-Athletes of the Week

Volleyball player Lucie Mahelova and soccer player Alex Pike have been named Wayland Baptist University Student-Athletes of the Week.

Mahelova came up with 30 assists – all but two of the team's total – when the Pioneers faced Texas Wesleyan, taking the Lady Rams to three sets.

"Lucie has great court sense and makes good choices. She is a very experienced athlete," volleyball coach Jim Giacomazzi said.

Mahelova, a 5-foot-10 senior setter from the Czech Republic by way of Laredo College, ranks 26th in the NAIA in assists per game at 8.7.

WBU next plays at Central Christian (Kan.) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Pike and the Pioneer soccer team secured a 4-2 win over Texas Wesleyan in what was the team's first road match of the season.

"Alex made some important interceptions and tackles that could easily have led to goals," soccer coach Robert Ssejjemba said.

Pike, a first-year transfer from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, is a 6-foot junior center-back from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

The Pioneers (4-1) host Central Christian, Kan., at 4 p.m. Friday.
