Following 22nd straight win, Queens set for showdown against top-ranked Oklahoma City

SILOAM SPRINGS, Okla. – In their last outing before a showdown with top-ranked Oklahoma City University, fifth-ranked Wayland Baptist scored 36 third-quarter points as the Flying Queens posted their 22nd straight win over John Brown University here Saturday afternoon, 94-59.

Jenna Cooper scored 25 points while Morgan Bennett and Kambrey Blake got 20 apiece to lead Wayland (26-2, 17-1 Sooner Athletic Conference). Bennett was 6-of-9 from 3-point range, Cooper 5-of-9 and Blakey 3-of-4 as Wayland went 15-of-33 (46 percent) overall from long range. Kaylee Edgemon and Payton Brown added 11 points each.

Bennett finished with a season-high 11 assists – one off her career-high – for her third double-double of the year. Cooper came up one rebound short of her ninth double-double.

The Flying Queens shot 54 percent (37-of-69) from the field, with a 6-of-8 effort from beyond the arch in the third quarter when they outscored the Golden Eagles (9-18, 5-13) 36-18 to take an 81-48 advantage. Wayland put in 31 first-quarter points and led by 14 after one.

The scoring slowed way down in the second and fourth periods when Wayland notched 14 and 13, respectively. The Flying Queens, who defeated Bacone on Thursday, 91-34, came up short of the century mark for the second straight game and remain tied with the 1977-78 and 2018-19 teams for most games over 100 at eight.

Wayland turned the ball over just six times, its second-lowest total of the season after the four turnovers in Tuesday's win over Oklahoma-Panhandle State.

John Brown was led by Sara Williams' 12 points.

The win set up a showdown for the conference title in Plainview on Thursday when the Flying Queens host top-ranked, undefeated OCU (27-0, 18-0) at 6 p.m. The Stars will be coming off their closest win all season, 64-62 at home over Science & Arts of Oklahoma. In that game, OCU fell behind by 11 in the first quarter before rallying. The Stars, who led by 11 with three minutes to play, blocked a would-be winning 3-pointer by the Drovers in the final seconds.

Wayland will be looking to avenge a disappointing 70-46 loss to OCU when they met in the second conference game of the season way back on Nov. 23.
