3 double-doubles power No. 2 Flying Queens past SAGU

WAXAHACHIE – Kaylee Edgemon, Jenna Cooper and Payton Brown all had double-doubles to lead No. 2 Wayland Baptist to an 89-70 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University here Monday night.

Edgemon ended with 24 points and 15 rebounds, Cooper 21 and 10, and Brown 14 and 10 to power the Flying Queens (4-0, 2-0 Sooner Athletic Conference). Cooper missed a triple-double by just two assists, while Brown came up four helpers shy of a triple.

Kaitlyn Edgemon added 11 points and Blakely Gerber nine for the Flying Queens, who went up big early. Ahead 5-4, Wayland scored 13 unanswered to take command. The Queens led it 22-9 after the first period then extended the margin to 21, 45-24, by halftime.

WBU's largest lead was 31, 63-32, with just under three minutes left in the third. SAGU outscored Wayland in the fourth, 26-22, to make for the final 19-point margin.

The Flying Queens shot 43 percent (37-of-87) from the field, but made only 5-of-32 (16 percent) from 3-point range. They missed only one of 11 free throws (91 percent).

SAGU (1-4, 1-1), led by Tamera Derrough's 28 points (10-of-29 FGs), shot just 31 percent (24-of-79) overall and 19 percent (7-of-36) from long range. The Lady Lions hit 15-of-25 free throws (60 percent).

WBU pulled down 54 rebounds, 13 more than SAGU. The Flying Queens suffered 19 turnovers.

Coach Alesha Ellis' team makes its home debut at 6 p.m. Thursday against Southwestern Christian (4-1, 0-1), which dropped its SAC debut on Saturday to USAO, 78-68. The Lady Eagles hosted MACU on Monday.
