After spearheading a remarkable comeback, Wayland Baptist freshman
Devin Avent has been voted Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
In what was his third game as a Pioneer, Avent went off for 36 points as he led WBU to a come-from-behind 78-75 victory over Texas Wesleyan in the team's Sooner Athletic Conference opener in Fort Worth.
Avent went 11-of-21 from the field, including 4-of-11 3-pointers, and nailed 10-of-12 free throws (83 percent). He scored 30 points in the second half alone to fuel the Pioneers' comeback from an 18-point hole in the final 10 minutes.
A 6-foot freshman guard from Fort Worth, Avent also led the team with six rebounds and three assists, plus had one steal as he played 39-plus minutes.
The Pioneers next take on No. 22 Southwestern Assemblies of God University at 8 p.m. today in Waxahachie.
