Soccer players
Bianca Roman and
Danijel Bozic have been named Wayland Baptist University Student-Athletes of the Week.
Roman helped the Pioneer women to a pair of wins over Mid-America Christian at home, 2-1, and on the road against Southwestern Assemblies of God, 1-0.
The 5-foot senior defender from Fort Worth, in her third season at Wayland after transferring from Tyler Junior College, scored her team-leading eighth goal against MACU then recorded her third assist, which ties for the team lead, against SAGU.
Roman, an All-SAC Second Team pick last season, has 18 career goals, the fourth-most in program history. She and the Pioneers (8-4-1, 4-2-1 SAC) are in third place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings. With two matches left in the regular-season, the Pioneers' eight wins already are the third-most in the history of the program.
Bozic, in his first season at Wayland after transferring from Iowa Central Community College, helped the Pioneer men to their seventh shutout of the season, a 2-0 victory over SAGU that saw Bozic pick up his first assist as a Pioneer. That victory followed WBU's narrow 2-1 loss to third-ranked MACU.
"Danijel has been a key part of our defense lately. He has been called on to play different positions and has been equally effective for us," coach
Robert Ssejjemba said.
Wayland's men's and women's team wind up the regular-season this week by hosting a pair of opponents, against Southwestern Christian on Tuesday and against Oklahoma-Panhandle State for Senior Day on Saturday. Action begins at 5 p.m. both days.
