DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Edgemon sisters combined for 42 points – 22 for Kaylee and 20 for Kaitlyn – to lead No. 8 Wayland Baptist to an 84-76 victory over No. 19 Clarke University in the final game of the Holiday Inn Express Tip-Off Classic here Saturday afternoon.
Wayland (2-0) trailed by 13 points as the Pride (1-1) got hot in the first quarter. The Queens ended that period with seven straight points to cut it to 27-21. WBU was up two at halftime, 43-41, and still by two, 65-63, after a back-and-forth third quarter.
The Queens never trailed in the final 10 minutes, opening the fourth with back-to-back baskets by
Kaylee Edgemon and never looking back. Clarke did cut it to two, 74-72, with 4 minutes to play, but Wayland responded with eight unanswered points to put it away.
Besides the big day for the Edgemons,
Jenna Cooper finished with a dozen points and was one of three players with six rebounds, alng with
Angel Hayden and Fapou Semebene. Hayden dished out eight assists and had two steals.
WBU committed just 11 turnovers while forcing Clarke into 22 giveaways.
It was the second straight game the Flying Queens overcame an opponent with double-digit 3-pointers. Clarke was 11-for-26 from long-range, a night after William Penn put in 10 3s in a 79-68 WBU victory.
The Flying Queens continue their four-game, season-opening road trip with a 5 p.m. tip-off Thursday in Hawkins, Texas, against Jarvis Christian. They'll follow that with a game at LSU-Alexandria at 1 p.m. Saturday before their home debut Nov. 11 against No. 23 Loyola (La.).
