SAGU avenges loss to WBU with sweep

Pioneers end regular-season at home next weekend

(This match was later forfeited by WBU).

WAXAHACHIE – Wayland Baptist will be looking to snap a three-match losing streak and gain momentum for the playoffs when the Pioneers end the regular-season at home next week.
The Pioneers' last setback came here Saturday afternoon when fourth-place Wayland fell to third-place Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Sooner Athletic Conference play, 25-22, 25-11, 25-23.

Wayland (20-9, 13-5 SAC), which fell to first-place Texas Wesleyan in Fort Worth on Friday night, held its own in the first, fell apart in the second, then fought from behind to make a run in the third. In the end, though, the Lady Lions got the job done, matching the Pioneers' sweep of SAGU in Plainview late last month.

Ranked the equivalent of 34th in the NAIA, WBU struggled offensively, hitting just .077 compared to .206 for SAGU. Jayla Schultz registered 14 kills and hit .265, but no other Pioneer had more than six smashes.

Ariel Marquez was the only WBU player with more than seven digs, getting 14. Lucie Mahelova ended with four blocks, two aces and 28 assists, while Alexa Hinojos and Schultz had three block-assists each.

WBU ends the regular-season at home next weekend against Southwestern Christian (7-17, 3-15) at 7 p.m. Friday and second-place Oklahoma City (15-8, 13-3) at 11 a.m. Saturday. On the road in the first half of SAC play, the Pioneers fell to OCU in three, 25-23, 25-19, 25-23, while defeating SCU in three, 25-18, 25-14, 25-19.
