SAN ANGELO – No. 1 Angelo State scored 11 runs in the first three innings to take control, and the Rams went on to win the opening game of a three-game series against Wayland Baptist here Saturday, 13-3. The game was called on the 10-run rule in the bottom of the seventh.
ASU (3-1) ended with 13 hits and was aided by four WBU errors. The Pioneers wound up with eight hits, including a pair of solo home runs by
Marco Rivera. Wayland's other run was scored by designated hitter
Brock Webber after he led off the fifth with a double then advanced on a pair of groundouts.
Carlos Collazo also had a pair of hits.
Junior
Tanner Solomon (1-1) started for the Pioneers, allowing 11 runs (six earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 2 2/3 innings. Sophomore
Ty Jackson threw 3 1/3 solid innings, giving up just one run on one hit with six strikeouts and three walks. Freshman
John Sauceda started the seventh and surrendered the final run.
Trent Baker (2-0) went the distance for ASU, striking out six with no walks.
The game saw a pair of USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award candidates in Wayland's
Luis Vargas and ASU's Josh Elvir. Vargas went 1-for-3, failing to homer for just the second game all season, while Elvir was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored three runs.
The teams meet for the final two games beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday and 1 p.m. Monday.
