SAN ANGELO – Wayland Baptist suffered a rare shutout here Sunday afternoon as the Pioneers fell to NCAA Division II's top-ranked team, Angelo State, 13-0.
The Pioneers (6-4) were limited to one hit, a single by
Carlos Collazo to lead-off the fourth. Collazo, who had two of Wayland's eight hits the previous day in a 13-3 WBU loss, was later retired on an inning-ending double-play.
Wayland managed just one other baserunner on a one-out error in the second.
ASU pitcher Benjamin Elder (1-1) went the distance, striking out six with no walks.
Jose Suero (1-2) took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits with five Ks and three walks in five innings.
Gloymer Cuevas relieved and in one-plus inning gave up eight runs on seven hits with two walks.
The game ended on a grand slam with no outs in the seventh, invoking the 10-run mercy rule for the second time in as many games. ASU (4-1) won on Saturday, 13-3.
It was the first time the Pioneers were shut out since a 5-0 loss to No. 9 USAO on April 12, 2019. That was WBU's first shutout in 64 games, dating back to back-to-back shutouts against Our Lady of the Lake the previous season.
The teams will meet for a third and final game at 1 p.m. Monday.
